Finals Nearly Complete
I’ve got 1 more final tomorrow evening, and I’m pretty much done (one assignment left, but that’s no big deal). Sorry for recycling old images, but that one really seems pretty accurate.
I think it’s bed time, so I can get up early and enjoy some more studying.
While some will be at the Firefox Summit, or enjoying the snow expected this week around here, I’m getting ready for some finals. Needless to say, my availability will be limited at some times during the next few weeks. So if you don’t get a reply from me, don’t think I’m ignoring you, your just in my backlog of stuff to get to. People who have write access to my transcript have a higher priority right now ;-).
I’ve got a ton of stuff in ‘the lab’ right now, so hopefully I can let some stuff out into the wild soon. If only these finals didn’t get in the way.
I’m expecting a fixed laptop this week, I think every possible delay has run it’s course, so I can’t imagine how anything else can delay it now. So once again, I’ll be somewhat offline and slow on pretty much everything. Next weekend a bit limited as I test the laptop out a bit, and hopefully I’ll be kicking some butt again next Monday. I’ll give a more detailed account of my experience when it’s all done, explaining the good and the bad (it’s a long story, trust me).
Yet another week with no laptop (though hope to have it back fixed shortly… perhaps more details on that later). So it’s lab only until Thursday. I’ll be checking in, but don’t count on speedy email replies until then.

I’ve been compiling a little list of some ways you can help online. There is a lot going on, so if you find one I haven’t mentioned, leave a comment so I can add it.
- Flickr Auction – the popular photo sharing site is holding an auction for prints of some donated photo’s. There’s quite a few reflecting some very talented people. If you’ve got some space for a photo and want to help out, this is a great way.
- eBay is using PayPals to collect money for United Way.
- Amazon is collecting through it’s “Honor System” making it easy to donate to the Red Cross through your Amazon.com account. Google is pointing to this.
- Yahoo is also collecting for the Red Cross through it’s website.
- MSN (Microsoft) is collecting money for the Red Cross.
- Apple made it easy to donate through it’s iTunes service (link opens in iTunes).
- Comcast notes a dozen charities which you can donate to (some accept online, some don’t).
- WritersCafe.net has been pushed rather extensively by Fark.com
- Major League Baseball (MLB) will be holding collections on September 7th (or a day of a teams choosing for teams away on that day).
- AOL is linking to a bunch of charities through NetworkForGood.com.

Just a quick heads up that I won’t be around much the next few days (until about Thurs evening) as I’m moving back to school, and don’t have a working laptop (IBM didn’t really repair it, just said they did). Hopefully IBM will redeem themselves by providing good customer service and getting it back quick. Phone support has been great, but this last “depot repair” experience was a bummer. I left a nice long letter in the “Inventory Control Sheet” for the tech who gets it. I’m shipping it tomorrow, meaning they have it Thursday morning, so hopefully by Friday they finish and ship so Saturday it’s at my door. I’m not holding my breath, but do hope it happens. Between school and catching up on some coding… it’s a system that I rely on.
So hopefully someone at IBM ‘s Depot repair will ensure my laptop comes back in working order (for real this time), and quickly.
I do like my Thinkpad (despite being a Mac Zealot) it’s a hearty laptop, well constructed as typical of IBM’s quality and craftsmanship, but I don’t really like sending it for service, and getting it back without it being fixed correctly. I don’t think that’s such a high standard I’m holding them to is it? Phone support is very helpful though. They did go the extra mile trying to help me out, giving me the info I need and everything. It’s just getting the machine physically repaired.
It seems like everybody’s doing it. This next week before school starts up again, it’s about organization. I got fed up about a month ago. Last week I started some work on it. This week I get serious. Papers need to be filed (quite a bit laying around), CD’s need some organization (I got a stack of them sitting right under my display for some reason). All data on computers needs to be filed away (desktop is cluttered, everything is all over). I’ve still got old textbooks to deal with as well.
So this week is about cleaning up, and getting ready for the upcoming semester.
Oh yea, a little cleaning of the reporter database is planned as well (you can nominate for deletion by leaving a comment in this post, and yes we will have an automated way in the future).
Also need to get a new can of air and clean out my keyboards. It’s about time.
Danny Tanner would be proud.
If you can’t tell, I’m somewhat of a neat-freak at times, and the backlog finally got to me.
Now hopefully with some new file folders, organization, a CD organizer, and a cleaned up computer, I can manage to keep it that way for a while.
Oh yea, will be spending some time cleaning up my Sony Clie PDA. Already put my schedule for next semester on there.
Email on the other hand has been pretty well managed all along. No clue why (especially considering how well spammed it is), but it’s very organized and taken care of.
If you have any tips for me, feel free to leave a comment. Oh yea, if anyone has an idea for a new header image for this blog, let me know. I think it’s time for a change, though I’ve been putting it off for a while.

Quiet Times
I’ve been somewhat quiet lately. I haven’t been coding much thanks to my computers all needing parts (hard drive, RAM). I’ve also just been taking some time off (away from the keyboard).
Today I even took out Sim City 2000 and installed it on my Mac mini. First time I touched that in several years. Ran rather well except for traffic not showing up well on the roads. Considering that’s a classic app, and I’m running Mac OS X 10.4, not bad. So much faster than it was a decade ago (I can do 1 year of simulation in about 10 seconds now). Getting it installed was the tricky part. Sim City 2000 came on floppy disks (remember those?) Had to boot up the old Performa, create disk images, and save it to a zip disk. Then use the G3 to convert the disk images to the newer dmg format as OS X Jaguar had no problem with it, but Tiger refused to read them. Then save it to Bender and download on the Mac Mini. That’s right, 4 Mac’s were involved. Thanks to only 1 floppy drive around (Bender has one, but there are no real OS X drivers for such an archaic device). So Sim City stole several hours of my day (damn it’s addicting).

Back from Aruba
Back from a week away in sunny Aruba [CIA Factbook | Wikipedia]. Beautiful sunny weather, resort, beaches, food. Saw Geraldo Revera [perhaps better link], (apparently staying in the same hotel on our floor, or the one above) and Greta Van Susteren (not sure if she was staying there or another hotel in the area). ABCNews also appeared to have some people there. Obviously in regard to the Natalee Holloway situation.
In other news the hard drive in my laptop is failing, and CDW failed to ship the new drive I attempted to purchase. Tomorrow is the 4th of July, so likely won’t get to call them and speak to a human being until Tuesday, and I’m sure it will take a few days to arrive (sigh). So I’m down to 1.25 computers (my laptop is at about 25%, and my Mac is at 100%).
I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do as well, reading, bugmail, etc. etc. I’ll be taking care of all that relatively soon.
So that’s why things have been quiet, and will continue to be somewhat erratic (until I get my new Hard Drive, since my email mainly resides on my laptop for mobility reasons).
