1100 Dual 2GHz G5’s

Yummy. Tech Porn. Boy would I like to tap some of that computing power. VT might be the coolest school now that they got a cluster going.

A great quote:

Project started back in February; secret with Dell because of the pricing issues; dealt with vendors individually because bidding wars do not drive the prices down in this case.

I would like to have 1 of those. Just 1. Besides, 1199 is a cooler looking number anyway. What do you say VT? πŸ˜‰

Edit: Math mistake above πŸ˜€ Should be 1099. Damn.

Apple Ads

Lately I’ve been seeing quite a few Apple ads on MacVillage.net. Since it’s done through an ad broker, I don’t know exactly what’s up. But I hope they keep it up.

With the relaunch, I hope to have things churning real soon. Unfortunately things are going a bit slower than I wanted. But they are moving. MacVillage.net should be ported to the new system within the next 6-8 weeks. The rest of the site (with the exception of a few seconds) should follow soon after. By years end Mac PR should move to the new system.

The new system is nice… believe me. It’s worth the wait.

Mac Village.net 4.0 “Daemon of the Abiss” WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT!

That is my promise. It will be worth the wait.

Thanks to all who have been so supportive of the site. It’s coming back, and I will be making up for lost time. The new system will be managable, meaning I could give the site the treatment it deserves. The old system required to much manual effort. It was a losing battle. Rather than suffer and die, I killed the old system, in hopes of a new one. One that is turning out to be pretty dang good if you ask me.

It’s going to be something. A lot has changed already behind the scenes. And quite a bit more will be changing in the near future.

More Camino

Will we ever get more Camino? It seems as if the project as dying.

This makes me very sad. IMHO it’s the best Mac OS X browser. Safari is second. It’s the power of Gecko, and the beauty of Mac OS X.

The best browser I’ve ever used. Also apparently dying.

Apple Lawsuit

Looks like Apple and the Beatles are at it again.

/. Has the story as usual.

Sidenote: What would I do without /.?

VT To Build G5 Super Computer

It’s official, since it hit slashdot earlier today. VT is building a supercomputer out of G5’s.

Wow, that must be pretty sweet.

Wonder why they aren’t waiting for G5 Xserve’s. Would save some space. Then again, maybe that’s what these are? Sneek peeks? Advanced boxes? Perhaps we shall see some officially in January? Perhaps Apple is holding off on them, so that they get some attention in January, and to focus ad $’s for the G5 Desktop.

Either way… NICE πŸ˜€

100k G5’s

Apple announced that 100k G5’s have been ordered on Monday.

Now that Apple is making that much… they should send me a freebie just to say “thanks for loving Mac OS X” πŸ˜‰

In other news, Bender (file server) is still running after 48 hours. A good sign. Lets see if it can beat the previous record of 40 days of service running Mac OS X 10.2. I doubt it as 10.2.7 will be released soon and require a restart… but after that, we will see.

MacWorld to stay in NYC?

The Register is running an interesting article. Apparently there is still debate if they should move or not.

Seems like Boston keeps losing things to NYC. Babe Ruth, many World Series, and now MacWorld NY

iTunes for Windows

Looks like Apple still plans to release iTunes for Windows by the end of the year.

Not bad. I would have thought it slipped to early next year. I’m still wondering what the UI will be like. A smoother OS X like port… or a Windows implementation of the Apple Service?

Safari Madness

I’ve used it before, but today I gave Safari a real go. Despite the fact that some bugs exist, it does a pretty good job. My biggest complement goes to the UI. It’s clean, simple, and totally Apple. It shares the same DNA as Steve Jobs.

I also like the snapback and iSync functionality. Some nice little Apple features make web browsing pleasant. Rendering is pretty good, fast, clean, and pretty compatible.

Still though, I favor Camino. From the pages I tested (including my own) it loaded faster, and had the best rendering of the two browsers (both of which blow Internet Explorer away). The biggest incompatibilities I’ve noted are mainly with JavaScript not functioning properly (especially sites with large complex scripts) or some XHTML pages. All of which Camino and Mozilla do very well.

IMHO the winner is still Camino, and the entire Gecko line of browsers, although Safari gets an honorable mention. It’s UI features are clearly superior.

I don’t think many sites will cater to KHTML browsers though. I think it’s much more likely for them to test in Netscape or other Gecko browsers, than KHTML based browsers. As a result, Gecko based browsers will most likely always have an upper hand in compatibility, unless KHTML manages to really keep up, despite the never ending obstacles that lie in it’s way.

A side note: I’m need to check out OmniWeb (the WebCore version), and give that a go. I haven’t gotten to that yet.

PowerMac G5

Boy is it odd missing a week of such big news (though vacation is nice). Got to love the new G5. Serious power. Just an odd looking case. And lack of a 2nd drive bay is quite sad. Especially considering what power is behind it. IMHO I like the extendability the big G3/G4 towers provided.

Panther sounds yummy.

Safari being released means i will be busy at work.

Last post of the day (promise)… bed time now. 5:30 comes early. Even bots such as myself need some recharge time. To the bed cradle.
