Removing AIM Today

Since upgrading to the latest AIM Beta (Which is pretty decent), one of the most annoying things is that AIM Today (that annoying popup ad when you sign on), always appears. No way to turn it off anymore.

Daniel Glazman notes that you can turn it off via the registry. To clarify his directions for those not to familiar with Regedit, you basically need the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareAmerica OnlineAOL Instant Messenger (TM)CurrentVersionUsersYOURSCREENNAMEHEREMisc]
"ShowAimTodayWindow"=dword:00000000

Save the above code snippet to a text file and name is aimtoday.reg

Remember to replace YOURSCREENNAME with your actual screenname.

Double click on the file, and add to registry when prompted. Quit and restart AIM.

This is of course AT YOUR OWN RISK. But it works!

Thanks to Daniel Glazman for the great tip.

  1. To Remove The new Aim Today popup window the easiest solution i have found is to Go into explorer then program files, aim , then make sure your aim is shut down and delete the files browse.ocm and popup.ocm it solved my solution and now no morw aim today popup windows please let me know if this works for you.

  2. the thing that rascal9712 said to do worked for me. i couldn’t figure out the other one. that aim today or whatever it’s called was so seriously annoying and i think it was putting unnesessary ads on my computer.

  3. deleteing those two files, browse and popup, will not let you open links sent through your friends anymore.

  4. I’m not so sure you should ever click on links in any message window anyway. Better to cut and paste the url into new address bar

  5. All you need to do:

Go to START and then RUN. Type in regedit.

Go to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder, then the SoftwareAmerica Online folder, and then the AOL Instant Messenger folder, and then the CurrentVersionUsers folder.

Find your screen name and open the folder. Find the MISC folder. Highlight and right click the ShowAimTodayWindow folder. Edit the binary. The first four 0’s stay there. Then you add 8 more, so it looks like this: 0000 00 00 00 00. Then just close out and voila, you’re done. I just did it. Works like a charm.

  6. I tried Slackerace’s solution, but found that the binary value was already set to zero. I still get that blankety-blank AIM Today window on AIM startup. Tried deleting the browse and popup files from AIM, but that also removes the stock ticker, which I like. Any other suggestions?

  7. I found and tried to remove the 2 .ocm’s you refer to but I am blocked because a ‘disk is full’?

  8. AIM Today is nothing but trouble, it cause’s all kinds of problems and I don’t want it anymore, its been making me very angry.

  9. Okay, so I tried every single one of these methods, and found that nothing worked. The good thing about AIM 6’s predecessors was that you had the option of turning off AIM Today at the installation. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible with the amazing AIM 6. But, by ******** around and finally getting upset beyond belief, I have found the ultimate solution.

I don’t know how it’ll work for different versions of AIM, but this is how I did it.

    START > RUN > regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    Software > America Online > AIM6 > Users > [select your SN]

there should be a file called “aol.imApp.signonoff.AIMtoday” …. or something along those lines. You’ll know it when you see it.

okay here comes the hardest part of all…

    delete the file. :]

no more pesky AIM Today, I also deleted the two OCM files but that was prior to this. let me know if this helped you out!

  10. I can’t find the browse.ocm or popup.ocm files nor is there a misc folder to change the binary? Has something changed since you wrote these fixes?? I hate the aimtoday popup and the myscreenname one too! I am about ready to get rid of AIM all together too!!

Would someone be kind enough to email me if you have a way to get rid of these two popups. I would really appreciate it!!

    Thanks!
