I really like this ad. Over the past 3 years or so this is what America has become.
Truthfully, I try not to use my phone when walking, talking, using the bathroom, at the table or other situations where it just seems grossly inappropriate. I think I’m one of the last holdouts. Given my inclination to prefer gadgets to social norms, this shows how far it’s gone.
Given this behavior skews even younger than me, I fear the worst is ahead of us.
Here’s an interesting video that went viral over the past few days. Brooklyn based band Atomic Tom’s instruments allegedly were stolen. Their resolve led them to use their iPhones and film a music video on the subway using their phones as instruments. Or so the story goes. I’m not sure if it’s a viral sensation or viral marketing.
I’m a bit skeptical about this one. They claim it was one take, multiple cameras were present, iPhones were the sole instruments used. I don’t have the time to analyze it close enough, but the sound is a little questionable. The thing that really gets me is the quality of the vocal track. While you can hear some ambient subway noise in the background it’s hard to imagine the phone picking everyone up so clearly when they are all singing given the position of the microphone and pick up so little subway noise otherwise. The iPhone does try to reduce ambient noise as much as possible, but this just seems to be beyond what it would do. Of course they could have done a little post-production work there. They don’t really say what post-production entailed.
Playing an iPhone instrument for the length of a song especially given their performance also seems a bit difficult. All four not messing up would be impressive, especially on a moving train.
Regardless, this little viral marketing seems to be working. Over the weekend it’s views were still in the thousands. It’s clearly on the way to the 2 million mark as of this blog post.
At least one of the apps used is iShred: Guitar + Effects, which is pretty cool.

Looking at this from the perspective of an adult, Big Bird and Snuffleupagus are nothing but sarcastic dicks in the first half of this song. I was still pretty young when this first aired so I guess I overlooked it back then if I saw it.
Today it’s funny but in a very different way than when I was little.
This video requires a little explanation for overseas readers. GAP ran a commercial titled “Talk To The Moose” in the US during the 2009 holiday season that was notable for featuring several young girls dancing and singing what became an Earworm for some people thanks to a fair amount of air time.
I’m not sure if the cute factor or the Earworm was the marketing approach.
The side effect of a commercial being memorable for any reason is that these days we get parodies thanks to the Internet! I’m pretty sure this one was filmed with alcohol nearby, but perhaps that’s what makes it so great. The painful looking flip is what puts it over the top. I’ve got a few side-by-sides because despite being so poor (in a funny way), it’s actually a surprisingly pretty good parody.

I rarely get into advertising or underwear on this blog but I had to share this one. It’s like a Miracle Bra… but for your butt.
I wonder if this booty pop trend will stick, or die quickly. I also wonder if it makes that popping sound when you put it on.

I’m amazed how quickly this stuff can get around the web. I’m pretty sure this is what Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn had in mind when working on TCP/IP.
