Not that it’s a realistic explanation, but Monica in Friends cited rent control as the reason she was able to afford the apartment on the cheap. She said her grandmother had lived in the apartment when rent control was established, plus she always had a roommate (or lived with someone) during the course of the series….

Anyway, nice job on this. Your post definitely brings back some memories.
